Introduction

Formosa Plastics Group established Taiwan Plastic Corporation in 1954. In 1957, it began production at a PVC powder plant with a daily output of four tons, which was the world's smallest PVC powder plant at that time. However, due to low production volume, high costs, and a lack of downstream processing clients in Taiwan, products piled up and faced severe sales stagnation, creating a dilemma. To break through this predicament, after repeated consideration, it was decided to increase production to reduce unit costs while simultaneously setting up processing plants to utilize PVC powder, and then expand exports through processed products.The PVC powder production was increased from 4 tons to 40 tons per day. In 1958, Nan Ya Plastics was established to engage in the secondary processing of plastics such as PVC pipes, leather, and sheets. Subsequently, to utilize the secondary processed products from Nan Ya, Xin Dong Company was founded to produce tertiary processed products including bags, suitcases, footwear, curtains, raincoats, and inflatable toys. Through this strategic approach, the sales困境 of PVC powder was eventually resolved. Later, through gradual expansion and the phasing out of Xin Dong, employees were encouraged to start their own businesses. This not only created an unparalleled tertiary processing system but also contributed to the subsequent vigorous development of the petrochemical industry, making significant contributions to Taiwan's economic growth.
